Today's Reading: Luke 18:31-43

Daily Lectionary: Job 38:1-18; John 12:20-36a

But they understood none of these things; this saying was hidden from them, and they did not know the things which were spoken. (Luke 18:34)

In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. In this Gospel story, the disciples of Jesus don't know what He's talking about. Then He opens the eyes of a blind man. The simple message is this: We need our Lord to open our eyes of faith so that we may believe what the Scriptures say about Him.

The Bible tells us that Jesus was conceived in the Virgin's womb, was baptized, preached and taught and did miracles and then was crucified on the cross and was alive again on the third day. But even the devil knows that stuff! Jesus laid it out for His disciples but it didn't mean anything to them until later on when Jesus had risen and they received the Holy Spirit on Pentecost.

The same goes for you. Just knowing the bare facts doesn't do you any good. Rather, you need to know that all that Jesus did, He did for you. To take away YOUR sins. To bring YOU into the faith. To rescue YOU from sin and death.

The truth is that we don't think our sins are that bad and so we don't think our salvation is all that great either. But consider what our sinfulness means: It means being blind: unable to see, unable to help ourselves. The Lord's Word must save us. And save us it does by teaching us how awful our sins really are. But not to make us feel bad. Rather, it is in order that we repent by the working of the Holy Spirit through the Word to turn from sin to faith and trust in Jesus Christ.

To put it another way, we need our eyes opened like this blind man so that we can see that those things that Jesus did, He did for us. So that's what the Lord does: He opens your eyes. Splashes them open at the font. Speaks them open by preaching and absolution and opens them by the forgiveness given in His Supper.

The Lord opens your eyes, the eyes of faith. And with those eyes you see Jesus your Savior. Receive your sight, your faith has saved you and made you well. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.

O Lord, we implore You, mercifully hear our prayers, and, having set us free from the bonds of sin, defend us from all evil; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. (Collect for Quinquagesima)

Antiphon:

Be my rock of refuge, a fortress of defense to
save me.*

For You are my rock and my

Psalm:

In You, O LORD, I put my trust; let me never
be ashamed;*

deliver me in Your
righteousness.

Into Your hand I commit my
spirit;*

You have redeemed me, O LORD
God of truth.

Have mercy on me, O LORD, for I am in
trouble;*

my eye wastes a-
way with grief.

Make Your face shine upon Your
servant;*

save me for Your
mercies' sake. (Psalm 31:1, 5, 9, 16)

Old Testament: 1 Sam. 16:1-13

David Anointed King

1The LORD said to Samuel,(A) "How long will you grieve over Saul, since(B) I have rejected him from being king over Israel?(C) Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite,(D) for I have provided for myself a king among his sons." 2And Samuel said, "How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me." And the LORD said, "Take a heifer with you and say,(E) 'I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.' 3And invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do.(F) And you shall anoint for me him whom I declare to you." 4Samuel did what the LORD commanded and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city(G) came to meet him trembling and said,(H) "Do you come peaceably?" 5And he said, "Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.(I) Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice." And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

6When they came, he looked on(J) Eliab and thought, "Surely the LORD’s anointed is before him." 7But the LORD said to Samuel,(K) "Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance,(L) but the LORD looks on the heart." 8Then Jesse called(M) Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, "Neither has the LORD chosen this one." 9Then Jesse made(N) Shammah pass by. And he said, "Neither has the LORD chosen this one." 10And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, "The LORD has not chosen these." 11Then Samuel said to Jesse, "Are all your sons here?" And he said,(O) "There remains yet the youngest,[a] but behold, he is keeping the sheep." And Samuel said to Jesse,(P) "Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here." 12And he sent and brought him in. Now he was(Q) ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the LORD said,(R) "Arise, anoint him, for this is he." 13Then Samuel took(S) the horn of oil(T) and anointed him in the midst of his brothers.(U) And the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.

The Way of Love

1If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2And if I have(A) prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith,(B) so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3(C) If I give away all I have, and(D) if I deliver up my body to be burned,[a] but have not love, I gain nothing.

4(E) Love is patient and(F) kind; love(G) does not envy or boast; it(H) is not arrogant 5or rude. It(I) does not insist on its own way; it(J) is not irritable or resentful;[b] 6it(K) does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but(L) rejoices with the truth. 7(M) Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things,(N) endures all things.

8Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. 9For(O) we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but(P) when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. 11When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 12For(Q) now we see in a mirror dimly, but(R) then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as(S) I have been fully known.

13So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Gospel: Luke 18:31-43

Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time

31(A) And taking the twelve, he said to them, "See,(B) we are going up to Jerusalem, and(C) everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished. 32For he will be(D) delivered over to the Gentiles and will be(E) mocked and shamefully treated and(F) spit upon. 33And after flogging him, they will kill him, and on(G) the third day he will rise." 34(H) But they understood none of these things.(I) This saying was hidden from them, and they did not grasp what was said.

Jesus Heals a Blind Beggar

35(J) As he drew near to Jericho,(K) a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36And hearing a crowd going by, he inquired what this meant. 37They told him,(L) "Jesus of Nazareth is passing by." 38And he cried out, "Jesus,(M) Son of David, have mercy on me!" 39And those who were in front(N) rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" 40And Jesus stopped and commanded him to be brought to him. And when he came near, he asked him, 41(O) "What do you want me to do for you?" He said, "Lord, let me recover my sight." 42And Jesus said to him, "Recover your sight;(P) your faith has(Q) made you well." 43And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him,(R) glorifying God. And(S) all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

Offertory

Blessed are You, O LORD! Teach me Your statutes. With my lips I have declared All the judgments of Your mouth. (Psalm 119)

Daily Lectionary

First Reading: Job 38:1-18

The LORD Answers Job

1Then the LORD(A) answered Job out of the whirlwind and said:

2"Who is this that(B) darkens counsel by words(C) without knowledge? 3(D) Dress for action[a] like a man;

I will question you, and you make it known to me.

4"Where were you when I(E) laid the foundation of the earth?

Tell me, if you have understanding. 5Who determined its measurements—surely you know!

Or who stretched the line upon it? 6On what were its bases sunk,

or who laid its cornerstone, 7when the morning stars(F) sang together

and all(G) the sons of God(H) shouted for joy?

8"Or who(I) shut in the sea with doors

when it burst out from the womb, 9when I made clouds its garment

and(J) thick darkness its swaddling band, 10and prescribed(K) limits for it

and set bars and doors, 11and said, 'Thus far shall you come, and no farther,

and here shall your(L) proud waves be stayed'?

12"Have you(M) commanded the morning since your days began,

and caused the dawn to know its place, 13that it might take hold of(N) the skirts of the earth,

and the wicked be(O) shaken out of it? 14It is changed like clay under the seal,

and its features stand out like a garment. 15From the wicked their(P) light is withheld,

and(Q) their uplifted arm is broken.

16"Have you(R) entered into the springs of the sea,

or walked in the recesses of the deep? 17Have(S) the gates of death been revealed to you,

or have you seen the gates of(T) deep darkness? 18Have you comprehended the expanse of the earth?

Declare, if you know all this.

Second Reading: John 12:20-36

Some Greeks Seek Jesus

20Now(A) among those who went up to worship at the feast were some(B) Greeks. 21So these came to(C) Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." 22Philip went and told(D) Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23And Jesus answered them, (E) "The hour has come(F) for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24Truly, truly, I say to you,(G) unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25(H) Whoever loves his life loses it, and(I) whoever(J) hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26If anyone serves me, he must(K) follow me; and(L) where I am, there will my servant be also.(M) If anyone serves me,(N) the Father will honor him.

The Son of Man Must Be Lifted Up

27(O) "Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? 'Father,(P) save me from(Q) this hour'? But(R) for this purpose I have come to this hour. 28Father, glorify your name." Then(S) a voice came from heaven: "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again." 29The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said,(T) "An angel has spoken to him." 30Jesus answered, (U) "This voice has come for your sake, not mine. 31(V) Now is the judgment of this world; now will(W) the ruler of this world(X) be cast out. 32And I,(Y) when I am lifted up from the earth,(Z) will draw(AA) all people to myself." 33He said this(AB) to show by what kind of death he was going to die. 34So the crowd answered him, "We have heard from the Law that(AC) the Christ remains forever. How can you say that(AD) the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?" 35So Jesus said to them, (AE) "The light is among you(AF) for a little while longer.(AG) Walk while you have the light, lest darkness(AH) overtake you.(AI) The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become(AJ) sons of light."

The Unbelief of the People

When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them.
